CLEVELAND, OH -- The Cleveland City Stars held their first official training session at The Edge Sports Performance Academy in Twinsburg earlier Monday. They will practice regularly for the next few weeks in preparation for their upcoming season, which opens on the Road on April 28th against their local Ohio rivals, the Cincinnati Kings. The Edge will be the official practice home for the Stars and is one of Stars’ major sponsors.
This is the first opportunity for Head Coach Martin Rennie and Assistant Coach Jake DeClute to see the newly signed Stars players together on one field. “It is great to have all this talent assembled in one place, and will give us a good first look at how the team will come together,” said DeClute.
In addition to the already signed players, which include Mark Schulte, Ian Leibbrandt, Luke Williams, John DeVae, Aaron Tredway and Hunter Gilstrap among others (current CCS roster and player bios under www.clevelandcitystars.com) several hopefuls were in attendance. A couple of players received a call back from the Open Tryouts and the CCS scouts identified a number of other players from the college and professional ranks with potential. Rennie knows that “finding players to complement the core we already have in place will be the challenge. But we clearly have a lot of very good options to choose from.”
STARS WELCOME SKELLY KELLAR AS LATEST ADDITION TO THE ROSTER
CCS is also excited about the recent signing of Skelly Kellar to the roster. He will complete his academic year at Azusa Pacific University before joining up with the team in early May. Kellar finished his college career with a record 27 assists, second in Azusa Pacific history and won 2006 NAIA All-American honors for his play in the midfield. Skelly has played the past two summers with the Southern California Seahorses PDL team and looks forward to taking his game to the next level with the Stars.
To complete their first week of training, the Cleveland City Stars will scrimmage the Cleveland State University Men’s Soccer team at Krenzler Field at noon on Saturday.
They also have a friendly scheduled with the Columbus Crew MLS Team at the Crew practice facility in Columbus next Tuesday, April 9th, at 11:00am. The team is working hard to get into game shape for the upcoming season and most importantly their first HOME OPENER on May 19th at 7:00 PM against the New Hampshire Phantoms at the Krenzler Field.
