Harrisburg announces preseason slate
HARRISBURG, PA -- The Harrisburg City Islanders will play a total of six games against a handful of the region’s most esteemed college soccer programs as part of their 2004 preseason exhibition schedule.
The Islanders kick off their preseason slate on Saturday, March 20, at Elizabethtown College with games against Elizabethtown (1:00 p.m.) and Villanova (2:00 p.m.). The club then travels to State College to face Barry Gorman’s Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday, March 27 (5:00 p.m.) before returning to Harrisburg to host Bucknell University on Sunday, March 28 at 4:00 p.m.
The team will round out their exhibition schedule with games at Lehigh University (Friday, April 2, 4:30 p.m.) and at home against Binghamton (NY) University (Tuesday, April 13) before commencing their regular season in Northern Virginia on Saturday, April 17.
The locations for the home games against Bucknell and Binghamton will be announced in the near future.
“We couldn’t ask for a better preseason schedule,” said Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher. “These are all top-notch programs and we’re thrilled to build relationships with them. Combined with our training schedule, this will give us a great opportunity to build towards opening night.”
The Islanders will face a host of local high school products in exhibition play, including Villanova’s Patrick Gallagher (Middletown) and Tony Watkins (Central Dauphin); Elizabethtown’s Edwin Tichenor (Cumberland Valley) and Jeffrey Boushell (Chambersburg); Bucknell’s Tom Sherman (Central Dauphin); and Lehigh’s Brandon Smith (Hershey).

The Harrisburg City Islanders will open 2004 preseason training camp at Keller Field in Hummelstown on Monday, March 15.
Among the host of players who will be in attendance for training camp’s opening day are four of the five players already signed by the club: midfielders Mike Feniger, Mike Henning, Derek Potteiger, and Pete Shellenberger. Forward David Bascome is completing his 2003-04 indoor season with the MISL’s Baltimore Blast. Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher, Assistant Coaches Mark Pulisic and Steve Widdowson, and Director of Scouting Mike Corney will also be on hand.
