Harrisburg opens preseason with pair of wins
Saturday, March 20, 2004 - Harrisburg City Islanders News Release - www.cityislanders.com

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA -- The Harrisburg City Islanders defeated Elizabethtown 2-0 and blanked Villanova 1-0 in the club’s first two preseason exhibition games at Elizabethtown College on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Shealer and Chris Hammacher accounted for Harrisburg’s scoring against the Blue Jays, and Mike Feniger tallied the Islanders’ lone goal against Villanova.

Five different Islanders goalkeepers and a host of defenders collaborated to unofficially hold both opponents without a shot on goal in the matches, which were played in two 25-minute halves with a running clock. Matt Reid started the first contest in goal and got the credit for the victory, and Matt Bernard was the winning keeper in the second outing.

Shealer, the all-time leading scorer in York College history, accounted for the first goal of the day in the 16th minute of the first match, when he took a through ball from former Reading Rage teammate Aleks Radovic, moved to the right side of the penalty area, and ripped a drive just inside the far post.

Hammacher put the Islanders up 2-0 in the 30th minute, as the product of Cedar Cliff High School and Eastern University pounded home another Radovic service. Another goal from Hammacher was called back in the 34th minute when he was deemed offside.

Two goalkeepers (Dave Kern and Yoji Yamano) and a backline featuring Casey Moore (who played for Elizabethtown in 2003), J.T. Dorsey, Hamani Hama, Justin Diener, and Ian Carter played a competent second half as Harrisburg held on for the 2-0 win.

Former Hershey Wildcats and Harrisburg Heat staple Mike Feniger created the only goal of the Villanova game. In the 45th minute, Feniger corralled an errant distribution out of the back and lofted a 25-yard volley into a vacated Wildcats net.

Bernard, who replaced starting backstop Dan Chamberlain at the half, faced no shots behind a defense that included Craig Tyrrell, Scott Ackerman, John Lapore, and Pete Shellenberger.

Notes: The Islanders used a total of 32 players in the two contests…Three of the five players (Mike Feniger, Derek Potteiger, and Pete Shellenberger) already under contract with the club appeared on Saturday. David Bascome and Mike Henning were not with the team…Harrisburg now has four games remaining on their exhibition schedule: on Saturday, March 27, at Penn State; on Sunday, March 28, versus Bucknell; on Friday, April 2, at Lehigh; and on Tuesday, April 13, versus Binghamton. The locations for the home games against Bucknell and Binghamton will be announced in the near future…The City Islanders open their inaugural season on Saturday, April 17, with a road game against the Northern Virginia Royals. The team’s home opener is slated for Saturday, May 8, against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
