Harrisburg continues preseason
HARRISBURG, PA -- The expansion Harrisburg City Islanders continued their preparation for their upcoming season with a pair of exhibition games against local universities.
The City Islanders dropped a 4-0 decision to the Penn State Nittany Lions in an exhibition game at Holuba Hall on Saturday afternoon, falling to 2-1 in preseason play with the defeat. Penn State secured the win with three goals in a 15-minute stretch late in the second half. Harrisburg will face Bucknell on Sunday afternoon in an exhibition game at Hersheypark Stadium (4:00 p.m. kickoff). Parking and admission for the contest are free.
Penn State target men Chad Severs and Simon Omekanda both finished with two goals and an assist in noteworthy performances on Saturday. Severs, a regional All-American in 2003, sandwiched a pair of scores (29th minute, 83) around a double from Omekanda (69, 80).
The Islanders, playing without probable starters Mike Feniger and Mike Henning among others, managed a smattering of chances in the first half but put forth their most effective attacks after the break. Seven of the team’s 11 total shots came over the final 45 minutes of the game. Striker Matt Shealer led Harrisburg with three attempts.
In a surprisingly spirited match, both defender J.T. Dorsey and Penn State grad Derek Potteiger received yellow cards (41st minute). Harrisburg was whistled for 10 fouls.
Matt Bernard started and played the first half in goal for the Islanders, making three saves and taking the loss. Dan Chamberlain replaced Bernard at intermission and made two saves.
Notes: Following Sunday’s affair, Harrisburg will have two games remaining on their exhibition schedule: on Friday, April 2, at Lehigh; and on Tuesday, April 13, versus Binghamton. The location for the home game against Binghamton will be announced in the near future.

The City Islanders received goals from strikers Chris Hammacher and Aleks Radovic in a 2-2 tie with the Bucknell Bison in an exhibition contest at Hersheypark Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the draw, Harrisburg’s preseason record is now 2-1-1.
Harrisburg controlled the run of play through the first 45 minutes of the match, outshooting the Bison 10-3 and building a 1-0 lead before the break. After a handful of narrow misses, including excellent chances inside the penalty area for Zack Matteoli (19th minute) and Radovic (23), Hammacher put the Islanders on the board. Radovic burst through the defense down the right wing and slipped the ball to Hammacher, near the top of the area, who applied a calm finish in the 34th minute.
Bucknell came out of intermission with energy, and tied the contest when Matthew Arias beat Islanders keeper Dave Kern (four saves in 90 minutes) with a header in the 52nd minute. The Islanders had a quick answer, as Radovic continued his outstanding preseason by pounding home a low Ian Carter cross in the 69th minute to make it 2-1.
The Bison’s persistency paid off in the 86th minute, when Jeremy Wong rolled home the rebound of his own initial shot. The Islanders fell short in their efforts to equalize down the stretch despite several late flurries.
Notes: Radovic has now scored five points (goal, three assists) this preseason…Harrisburg’s up-tempo pace resulted in 17 shots (nine of them on goal), the most generated by the team this preseason…Harrisburg now has two games remaining on their exhibition schedule: on Friday, April 2, at Lehigh; and on Tuesday, April 13, versus Binghamton. The location for the home game against Binghamton will be announced in the near future.
