The defending A-League champion Charleston Battery tied 1-1 with the defending PSL champion Wilmington Hammerheads tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 4,803. In the second game the Columbus Crew held DC United to a 0-0 tie to win the inaugural Carolina Challenge Cup. The Charleston Battery lost to Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew tonight at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of 3-1 in front of 1,620. Charleston took an early lead through a Paul Conway strike but could not hang on as the Crew powered back with three unanswered goals. Meanwhile, DC United edged the Hammerheads in Wilmington 1-0 on a Jaime Moreno penalty kick.

The Charleston Battery lost to DC United by a score of 2-1 tonight at Blackbaud Stadium, in front of a crowd of 4,350. The game was the first match of the 2004 Carolina Challenge Cup. Midfielder, Bobby Convey scored the winner for United in the 83rd minute, with a superb free-kick from just outside the box. In the other Carolina Challenge Cup match played tonight, the Columbus Crew defeated the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-0.

The second season of the San Diego Gauchos kicked off Saturday evening in an exhibition with cross-border rival Nacional de Tijuana. With one win and loss apiece heading into the third match between the two teams, the series remained even at 1-1-1 with the match played to a 1-1 draw. Goals were scored by Tijuana player Juan Caballero and Gaucho rookie Fabian Sandoval.
