SILVER SPRING, MD -- The Real Maryland Monarchs announced their first four signings of 2009, pending USL & US Soccer Federation approval. The new additions include a central defender, two midfielders and a forward.

Central defender Ashleigh Townsend will join Real Maryland from the Wilmington Hammerheads. The 6’2 English defender comes to the Monarchs with good experience having played in the league for the past few seasons and also earning All-League Second Team honors.

“I’ve worked with Ashleigh in the past, and I’m very pleased he’s joining us,” said Head Coach Anthony Hudson. “He’s a very strong defender and a great leader. He brings a lot of positives to our team.”

Ashleigh is a graduate of University of the Cumberlands, where he was named to the all-conference team every year of his four-year college career.

“I am looking forward to a great year with Real Maryland, where I hope to make a big impact,” said Townsend.

Spanish born Jonathan Calero, who has several years experience playing professionally in Spain, put pen to paper just before the new year. The 6’2 center forward who has been playing his football for Spanish clubs UD Salamanca, Villanovense, Moralo and Cacereno B recently moved to Maryland.

“He’s big, strong and good on the ball. I think he’s going to be very useful in this league,” Hudson said.

Maurice Hughes joins Real Maryland with previous USL experience, having started his professional career with the Atlanta Silverbacks.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to continue my professional career with Real Maryland FC. I look forward to working with Coach Hudson and preparing for the 2009 season," said Hughes.

Both Maurice Hughes and Jonathan Calero we’re spotted at the Real Maryland 2008 tryouts held in December.

Victor Ramirez will return to Real Maryland for his second season. Ramirez, who caught a lot attention last year, is hoping to lay down a permanent spot in the first team.
