CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Charlotte Eagles announced the re-signing of Colombian star midfielder Jorge Herrera today at Eagles headquarters in Matthews. The deal keeps Herrera in Charlotte through 2011 as the Eagles look to receive the same production from the Colombian they saw in their 2008 USL-2 Regular Season Championship campaign.
After initially signing with Charlotte in 2007, Herrera immediately impacted the league with one goal and five assists in five games played before having to go back to Colombia to work out a visa issue. Those circumstances kept Herrera in Colombia until 2008 when he was able to return to Charlotte in time for the start of the 2008 season.
Herrera picked up right where he left off as he and eventual 2008 USL-2 MVP Dustin Swinehart became an offensive force in the league as the two combined for 27 goals and 13 assists. Their play guided the Eagles to the regular season title and a seventh trip to the USL-2 Final. He recorded nine goals and six assists during that campaign and was named a USL-2 MVP Finalist only to see his teammate Swinehart claim the MVP Award.
"I’m very excited to have a deal that keeps me here in a community that I’ve really grown to love for the long term," stated Herrera. "This offer gives me the chance to continue playing for a special team, and the chance to impact the lives of youth players in the Hispanic community."
In addition to playing his second full season with the Eagles in 2009, Herrera will continue to lead the Eagles new personal training program "Eagles Academy" with fellow teammate Patrick Daka. More information on the academy can be found in the youth soccer section at www.CharlotteEagles.com.
